We started yesterday with a leisurely breakfast at one of my favourite restaurants - conveniently close to Fabricland - and then went shopping. Caroline lives in Northern Canada... way up north... 2,100 miles north of me. Right now, there are two quilt shops but no fashion fabric stores so she stocks up when she's down south. Always fun.

We shopped and then we sewed. I've made a good start on the Vogue 1333 skirt. The overlay is conditionally finished. The edges are hemmed and the top and bottom pleats are sewn to follow the markings on the pattern. The middle pleat would not lay correctly and is causing a weird bend. I'm leaving it for now. Once the rest of the skirt is finished and I can see how it should hang, I'll figure out what needs to change. Since the pleat is stitched in the middle of the overlay and the stitch lines don't connect to any seams, it's easy enough to redistribute the fold. I haven't pressed them yet for that reason.

The back and front pieces are cut on fold. There are two cutting lines along the hem. The shorter one is for the left side. You cut out the full piece and then trim away one layer - the left one - to the second hem line. I could just see myself cutting off the wrong side and having mismatched angles so instead I'm going to play with another tuck of that side. I can insert that after the fact as well.

The fabric drapes nicely and smells and acts like a cotton linen blend. It presses beautifully. I have a thing about pressing and love fabrics that press neat and crisp. On the right side, you can barely see the seam. When I bought the fabric a few months ago, it was labeled unknown fibres which really seems ridiculous for a fabric store but since I'm so used to buying in the unlabeled bargain center, it was fairly normal for me. After I'd washed it, I wanted more only it was sold out by then. GORGEOUS.
Caroline is working on a blouse and once again, I am able to share the learning I've done over the last few months about chest, shoulder, and armhole shapes. I love that. It's fun to learn and it's fun to share.
We're going to sew for most of today, go out for dinner tonight, and tomorrow afternoon she's heading home... already. The guys aren't back until late Sunday and Avery is visiting relatives in another city so I'll have about 24 hours of alone-ness. And this is good. I'm looking forward to that too.
