The sun is shining this morning and it looks like the weather is going to make a shift. YEAH. Today marks the start of the May long weekend which is traditionally seen as a time for gardening, camping, and other outdoor activities. It's always nice when it's warm. I'm going to sew.

Howard is leaving for Guatemala early tomorrow morning. After breakfast with my oldest son, I have plans to spend the afternoon sewing with my friend Wendy. Last night, I pulled this selection of black and purple fabrics and I'm pondering possibilities using Vogue 8691 lengthened to a dress. The purple stretch lace is somewhat see-through so a slip underneath has to be part of the plan and hemline details could add to the fun.

There was a request for a detail shot of the neckline with the twin needle stitching. To sew on the binding, I first test with the serger to make sure the differential is set correctly and will not stretch the neckline. Then, I pin the binding in place using some but not great tension. It needs to be slightly smaller to pull the neckline flat against the body but not so much smaller that it gathers the neckline. The band is serged in place and then turned up and over to the back. The edge of the presser foot holds the fold over while the binding is stitched with a double needle. One line of stitching falls into the groove and the other onto the binding.

This picture was taken a few weeks ago but I love my daughter's smile especially and how my son-in-law's sense of humor shows through. Today is my grandson's 1st month-a-versary. They're coming to visit in a few weeks so part of my task while Howard is gone is to fix the walls in the guest room and repaint from its brief period as a studio and to get the crib I bought at Habitat For Humanity washed and put together. But first... a dress.
